Finster's Paintings

"I'd rather put one sermon out in art than fifty out of my mouth"

- Howard Finster (Wojkik, 2008, 181)

Finster's work was inspired by familiar apocalyptic and biblical imagery, as well as American pop culture icons and themes. Finster did not draw a line between folk art and  professional art. His paintings are a physical manifestation of the union of folk and professional art. His masterful productivity can be attributed to his tendency to use repetition in his pieces. He would often use stencils or cutouts to reproduce similar faces or beings. Although Finster's art was filtered through an evangelical lens, his pieces depicted current issues and politics in an attempt to reach the younger generation. Most of his creations were rooted in resourcefulness, spontaneity, and imagination. He took it upon himself to devote all of his time to painting his visions so he could spread God's message. His pieces often include some words or phrases to further express his
